Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlan with Volcano in backgroundLake Atitlan, situated in the Guatemalan Highlands, is the deepest lake in Central America. Known as an “endorheic” lake – one from which no water flows to other bodies of water – its name is believed to be Mayan for "the place where the rainbow gets its colors."

The lake is volcanic in origin and has changed several times due to volcanic activity. The basin’s rich soil is ideal for crops like coffee, corn, onions, beans, tomatoes, and strawberries.

Many beautiful villages surround the lake and Mayan culture is still quite prevalent in these towns. Other villages on the shore, such as Panajachel, have become very tourist-oriented, and several resorts have sprung up in the region, catering to travelers hoping for a luxurious and relaxing vacation with an amazing water view.
