Situated in the highlands of Guatemala at about 1,965 meters (6,447 feet), the traditional Mayan Indian town of Chichicastenango is easily reached from Guatemala City.

The town was named by the Spanish (its Mayan name was Chaviar) and its name means “City of Nettles.” These days, it is known mostly for its weekly “markets” – held on Thursdays and Sundays – where visitors can buy a number of traditional items, including beautiful handmade women’s blouses and intricately carved wooden masks, as well as food. Another must-see in Chichicastenango is the church of Saint Thomas (Santo Tomas), built 400 years ago and still used by priests for ancient Mayan rituals.
