Located just beyond the Guatemalan border in Honduras, the ruins of Copan are often visited by those vacationing in Guatemala. Situated in a forested area along the river of the same name, Copan is best known for its portrait stelae.
Historians and archaeologists believe that the Mayan city was home to minor nobility, scribes, and artisans, who lived in homes of cut stone. Throughout the centuries, however, earthquakes and floods have wiped out many of Copan’s structures, but archaeologists are currently working to restore the city, which was probably abandoned around the 9th century AD.
