El Mirador

An important trading center during the Mayan pre-Classic period (about 300-150 BC), El Mirador once housed about 80,000 residents and was one of the largest cities in Central America.

Situated in the Peten jungle of Northern Guatemala, this Mayan outpost can be difficult to reach and getting there involves some trekking through the jungle, which is why it attracts fewer tourists than some other Mayan sites.

The same size as Tikal, this Mayan city once contained the largest concentration of civic and religious buildings in the Mayan world and those who venture here will be treated to such landmarks as the 230-foot-tall (70 meter) Danta Pyramid, the tallest ever built.
