How to Get Around Guatemala

Because Guatemala is largely rural, getting around can sometimes be a challenge, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the roads and terrain. Most travel professionals recommend using one of Guatemala’s many shuttle services or hiring a personal car and driver to get where you need to go. Tour buses to most major attractions are available from hotels near those attractions. Local buses are not recommended as they are often in disrepair though you may find “deluxe” buses in the beach towns. Driving independently in Guatemala can be a challenge as road rules are lax and tourists are usually advised not to drive at night as the crime rate in Guatemala against foreign travelers soars when the sun goes down.
