Because Guatemala has 14 different eco-regions, making it one of the planet’s biodiversity “hotspots”, the wildlife in this Central American country is quite diverse as well. Researchers estimate that the country boasts 250 species of mammals, 600 species of birds and 200 species of reptiles and amphibians, as well as many species of butterflies and other insects.
Among the best places to view Guatemala’s fascinating wildlife are the many “protected” areas within the country, including the wonderful Maya Biosphere Reserve near Tikal, which includes more than 57,600 hectares (about 142,000 acres) of jungle and all the animals that live within it.
