View to Lake Atitlan from PanajachelA lovely town situated on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Panajachel has become one of Guatemala’s top tourist attractions. In the 16th century, the town was the site of a battle between the Spanish and Tz'utujils. The Spanish triumphed and opened a church there to convert the Mayans to Roman Catholicism.

Today, Panajachel is full of hotels, night clubs, and restaurants, and caters to tourists seeking a relaxing vacation at a fairly affordable price. Aside from tourist amenities, however, the town is home to many examples of beautiful colonial architecture, including a number of churches. There are a handful of interesting archaeological museums located in Panajachel as well. Guests should also consider visiting the San Buenaventura Nature Reserve.
