Panajachel, Guatemala

A lovely town situated on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Panajachel has become one of Guatemala's top tourist attractions. In the 16th century, the town was the site of a battle between the Spanish and Tz'utujils. The Spanish triumphed and opened a church there to convert the Mayans to Roman Catholicism.

Today, Panajachel is full of hotels, night clubs, and restaurants, and caters to tourists seeking a relaxing vacation at a fairly affordable price. Aside from tourist amenities, however, the town is home to many examples of beautiful colonial architecture, including a number of churches. There are a handful of interesting archaeological museums located in Panajachel as well. Guests should also consider visiting the San Buenaventura Nature Reserve.
