Situated across Lake Atitlan from the upscale tourist city of Panajachel, San Pedro La Laguna is the preferred lake town for those traveling on a budget.

Touted as not only cheaper but also less commercial than Panajachel, this earthy town attracts backpackers with its low-cost lodgings and edgy night spots.

Like Quetzaltenango, it’s also home to a number of Spanish language schools, so visitors tend to be on the younger side. Those visiting San Pedro La Laguna can rent canoes or kayaks, hike up the San Pedro Volcano (just behind the town), or enjoy a warm soak at the local thermal baths.
