Santa Elena, Guatemala

Located within easy driving distance of the ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal and several other ruins sites, Santa Elena is largely a town that provides amenities for tourists visiting the region. Because there are few accommodations in Tikal, most travelers stay here or in Santa Elena's sister city of Flores.

An airport – an alternative to larger La Aurora Airport – is also located here as is the bus station. Hotels in Santa Elena tend to be a little less expensive than at the island city of Flores so it's a good place for budget travelers to hang their hats. Spelunkers should take the time to explore the nearby Cave of the Serpent.
